Sisal, Jute, and Seagrass Rugs
A popular choice for casual decorating are natural fiber rugs. They come in an assortment of fibers of which
Sisal, Jute, and Seagrass are the most popular. Some of the other choices are Bamboo and Mountain Grass.
Sisal
Many of the Sisal Fiber rugs are produced from fibers that come from Kenya and Tanzania where they are extracted
from the agave plant. The fiber is long, fine, and its fibrous qualities permits the Sisal to be spun into
smooth textured yarn. The fiber is strong which adds to it's durability
and because it is versatile it offers a wide range of use. Since Sisal fibers are naturally anti-static, sound
absorbing, flame retardant, and long lasting they are an ideal choice with enormous manufacturing possibilities.
Jute
Jute rugs date back to the beginning of rug making. Brilliantly dyed jute fibers have been found in Neolithic
remains dating back thousands of years. Thirty-five hundred years ago the Jute stalk was a tradition of native
craftsmen of Bangladesh and is still to this day widely used. In seventeenth century these beautiful fiber
rugs were popular in the British Empire. Throughout history jute fiber has been treasured for its capacity
to take and hold beautiful colors.
The inner fibers of the jute stalk are very soft after retting, cleaning and combing and being spun into yarn.
Even though the fiber is soft it is very strong and durable. Natural jute varies in colors from light tans
to browns, which is visible in each rug. When exposed to sunlight jute can change in color. The fiber is quite
resistant and can be cleaned by shampooing or dry-cleaning. The fiber also has a natural sheen which retains
the look of fine silk. Like Sisal, Jute fiber is strong and has natural fire retardant properties.
Seagrass
Seagrass is a popular natural fiber that is also woven into area rugs. This durable grass is obtained from
a tall plant with grass-like stems found in wet lands. Seagrass can be recognized by it's grassy, hay-like
scent and coloring which dissipates with time. Colors range from sage green hues to olive and has a non-porous
surface that gives it a naturally smooth texture and sheen. It's rigidity gives it natural durability and it
too, is very stain resistant. Even though seagrass retains the odor of the plant from which it is extracted
once the carpet is unrolled and installed the odor dissipates over time.
