Design Tips Using Area Rugs
An accent area rug can be anything from a fine investment to a whimsical decorative element. Area rugs come
in all sizes, shapes, colors, textures, and add comfort to any room in the home. Here you'll find ideas on
how to use accent rugs as design elements in your home.
Enhancing the interior space within your home with decorating rugs takes a little planning, but it is well
worth the time. First begin with a sketch of the dimensions of the room you are wanting to decorate. Work with
various shapes and sizes of possible area rugs. Follow the line of any design features in the home, such as
a bay window or ceiling medallion. Create groupings around or within an area such as a reading nook, in front
of a fireplace, or in a play area.
If you have a very large room, rather than having one continuous pattern you might try two smaller complementary
rugs. This will help by creating a grouping in the room to make the room feel a bit cozier.
Also, consider the size of the room versus the color and texture of the rug. Larger rooms can accommodate
larger borders. You can even go three or four feet wide with contrasting colors or texture to add drama and
contrast. Borders that are smaller, two to three inches wide, open up the space. Especially if you use neutral
colors and softer textures. This is especially important when decorating smaller rooms.
Your imagination can take you in many directions, so have fun when contemplating your perfect area accent
rug.
Take a step back in history and check out different patterns. Try patterns from Persian, ancient Orient, to
Victorian to get a feel for your individual taste. You may end up favoring a more modern look with bold, charismatic
color on color. A design such as this can be quite modern and stimulating. Or you might like the muted tones
which lend themselves to a more formal effect, especially with lighter hardwood floors. For a more tropical
or casual feel you might choose one of the natural fibers like sisal and sea grass. This gives an indoor-outdoor
feel, welcoming the elements of nature into your home. Whatever your decor, hardwood floors and area rugs will
enhance your look and create a home atmosphere that you will enjoy living in.
